Sartène
Located just south of Propriano and further inland. This Corsican village is an important place in the Corsican tradition. Prosper Mérimée traveled there in 1839 as “Inspector of Historic Monuments” and described this Corsican city as “The most Corsican of Corsica cities“.
Sartène keeps in its architecture, a massive and imposing aspect. The history of Sartène is very old, as it dates back to the Middle Ages. Created by the Genoese, it is the only city built by them that is not by the sea.
Despite this, Sartène is a fortified city, and it has a strategic position to defend itself. To better observe this particular position, you have to go to the heart of this city. More particularly in the old town on the Place de la Liberation, the main square of the city. If you pass under the town hall, you will come to the Manighedda district, the oldest district of Sartène.
